ARLINGTON, Va. – Ahead of the start of the summer travel season and one of the busiest weekends of the year, law enforcement is once again partnering with the Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to remind motorists to fasten their seat belts. The National High Visibility Seat Belt Campaign, Click it or Ticket, which coincides with the Memorial Day holiday, runs from May 23 to June 6, 2022 and aims to reduce the number of fatalities that occur when drivers and passengers do not buckle up.

According to the NHTSA, 10,893 occupants of unbuckled passenger vehicles were killed in crashes in the United States in 2020. In the same year, 58% of passenger vehicle occupants killed at night (6:00 p.m. – 5:59 a.m.) were not wearing their seatbelts. That’s why law enforcement agencies across the country are educating drivers about the importance of wearing seat belts. the Click it or Ticket combines powerful seat belt safety messages with high-visibility enforcement for unbuckled motorists.

Virginia law requires that anyone under the age of 18 be properly restrained in a seat belt or child safety seat no matter where they are seated in the vehicle, and the driver is responsible for ensuring that this occurs. Additionally, Virginia law requires that anyone sitting in the front seat of vehicles be properly restrained, regardless of age, and those 18 and older may be ticketed.

Everyone wants you to get to your destination safely, so it’s essential to practice safe driving habits, like wearing your seatbelt, every time, every trip. For more information on the US Department of Transportation’s NHTSA Click it or Ticket campaign, visit their website.
