SEOUL, June 9 (Korea Bizwire) – Kakao Corporation, the South Korean mobile phone giant, revealed Thursday that it has launched a new mobile transport application called “KakaoMetro”. The new app is a complete overhaul of an existing Android app, Subway Navigation, which Kakao acquired in 2015. Kakao has also released an iOS version of the new app.

Kakao enhanced the existing app by capturing details of the subway system, including geographic locations and characteristics of subway lines, in five cities in Korea: metropolitan area of Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Gwangju, and Daejeon.

The new app also includes illustrations of major landmarks such as Building 63 in Yeouido and N Seoul Tower near Myeongdong.

It also includes an alarm function that alerts the user before arriving at their final destination. Users can also share their estimated time of arrival through Kakao’s flagship messenger, KakaoTalk.

In addition, the app is the first Korean subway app to include information about the car and door numbers of the subway closest to the station exits. The app also offers information on bus transfers, as well as more detailed information about station exits, such as notable facilities near each exit.

Kakao has released an English version of the app for international users and plans to develop a Chinese version of the app in the future.
